Dua Kumayl Supplication Prayer (دعاء کمیل) is famous after the name of Kumayl Ibn Ziyad Nakhai who was a confidant amongst the companions of Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as) and this sublime Dua was first heard from the beautiful voice of Imam Ali as. This holy supplication is full of pleading, humbleness, and submission to the Almighty Creator. It has both mystical and moral contents.
According to Allama Majlisi (on whom be Allahs Mercy) Kumayl had attended an assembly in the Mosque at Basra which was addressed by Imam Ali as in the course of which the night of the 15th of the month of Shaban was mentioned. Imam Ali as said, Whosoever stays awake in devoutness in this night and recites the Dua of Prophet Khizr (as), undoubtedly his supplication will be responded to and granted.

When the assembly at the Mosque had dispersed, Kumayl requested Imam Ali as to acquaint him with Prophet Khizrs Dua. Imam Ali as asked Kumayl to sit down, record and memorise the Dua. Imam Ali as also advised Kumayl to recite this Dua on the eve of every Friday, or once a month or at least once in every year so that, added Imam Ali as, Allah may protect you from the evils of the enemies and the plots contrived by impostors. O Kumayl! in consideration of your companionship and understanding, I grant you this honour of entrusting this Dua to you.
This dua has been narrated in Mesbah al-Mutahajjid of Shaykh Tusi, one of the greatest Shia scholars and author of Shia’s two trustworthy jurisprudential books. The book "Mesbah al-Mutahajjid" is one of the old and reliable sources. Shaykh Abbas Qommi, the author of "Mafatih al-Jenan" has quoted this supplication from the same book. Therefore, based on the recommendations, this supplication is recited on the night of the 15th of Shaban and on the eve of (i.e. evening preceding) every Friday with the intention of seeking divine forgiveness.
